Sustainability in Slackline / Highline Events: Lessons from the Choose Life Festival – World Cup Edition 2025

As adventure sports, especially slacklining and highlining events, continue to grow worldwide, organizers face an increasingly important challenge: how to create unforgettable experiences while protecting the natural environments that make these events possible.

The Choose Life Festival – World Cup Edition 2025, held in the stunning landscapes of Chapada dos Veadeiros, Brazil, offers a valuable case study in both the opportunities and challenges of sustainable event management.

The festival brought together more than 500 athletes, volunteers, organizers, and visitors from around the world for four days of highlining, competitions, workshops, cultural activities, and community exchange. Hosting the first Highline World Cup in Latin America, the event represented a significant milestone for the global slackline community. At the same time, its location within one of Brazil’s most ecologically sensitive regions made sustainability a critical consideration.

Sustainability Report: Choose Life Festival – World Cup Edition 2025

Areas of Strength

One of the most encouraging findings was the festival’s commitment to responsible waste management. Partnerships with local organizations such as Murundu Compostagem and Cavalcante Recicla helped create waste separation systems that encouraged attendees to sort recyclable, organic, and mixed waste.

Participants recognized these efforts, making Responsible Production and Consumption the highest-rated sustainability category, with nearly 80% positive responses. Waste collection points were available in key areas, and many attendees actively participated in recycling initiatives. While improvements are still needed, the festival demonstrated that collaborative waste management systems can successfully engage both visitors and local organizations.

Another positive result was found in the Health and Wellness category. Medical support teams, first aid stations, rescue personnel, and safety infrastructure were present throughout the event. Approximately 70% of survey respondents expressed confidence in the available medical support. This reflects the organizers’ strong focus on participant safety in an inherently high-risk sport environment.

The festival also achieved moderate success in fostering community participation. Local volunteers, sports teams, and social initiatives contributed significantly to event operations. Community groups were provided space for dialogue and engagement, helping strengthen connections between the event and the surrounding region.

Recommendations for the Future

  • The report provides a roadmap for strengthening sustainability performance in future editions of the festival. Key recommendations include:
  • Expanding access to safe drinking water and ecological sanitation systems.
  • Implementing environmental education campaigns before and during the event.
  • Encouraging the use of renewable energy technologies such as portable solar systems.
  • Increasing environmental signage throughout natural areas.
  • Strengthening wildfire prevention protocols and emergency preparedness.
  • Eliminating single-use materials and further promoting reusable products.
  • Improving communication regarding safety procedures, medical services, and environmental guidelines.
  • Conducting post-event restoration activities, including reforestation and soil recovery initiatives.

A Promising Foundation

Overall, the sustainability assessment concluded that the Choose Life Festival demonstrates a moderate level of sustainability performance. The event has established important foundations in waste management, participant safety, and community engagement. However, substantial opportunities remain to improve water management, climate education, fire prevention, and ecosystem protection.

Perhaps the most important takeaway is that the festival has already shown a willingness to evaluate its impacts transparently and identify areas for improvement. This commitment to continuous learning is a critical step toward becoming a model for sustainable slackline and highline events in Latin America and beyond.

As outdoor sports continue to attract larger audiences, events like Choose Life have the opportunity not only to celebrate adventure and community but also to demonstrate how recreation, conservation, and social responsibility can successfully coexist in some of the world’s most extraordinary natural environments.

Why Sustainability Matters in Chapada dos Veadeiros

The festival took place near Cavalcante, Goiás, in the heart of the Brazilian Cerrado, one of the world’s most biodiverse savanna ecosystems. The region is home to unique wildlife, fragile soils, important water resources, and several endangered species. However, it is also highly vulnerable to environmental pressures such as erosion, habitat disturbance, and especially wildfires during the dry season.

Recognizing these challenges, the International Slackline Association’s Nature and Access Commission conducted a comprehensive sustainability assessment aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The evaluation focused on eight key categories:

  • Climate Action
  • Life on Land
  • Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Responsible Production and Consumption
  • Health and Wellness
  • Sustainable Communities
  • Soil and Post-Event Restoration
  • Fire Management and Prevention

The assessment combined expert observations, participant surveys, and qualitative feedback to establish a baseline understanding of the festival’s environmental and social performance.

Key Sustainability Challenges

Despite these positive achievements, the assessment identified some areas requiring attention.

Water and Sanitation

While the festival successfully provided access to water across its different activity areas, the assessment identified opportunities to further strengthen water and sanitation management. Expanding access to drinking water points, improving communication about water quality, and introducing ecological sanitation solutions in high-use locations would enhance both participant comfort and environmental protection. Given the ecological importance of Chapada dos Veadeiros, these improvements represent a valuable opportunity for future editions to further reduce environmental impacts and reinforce the festival’s commitment to sustainability.

Climate Action and Environmental Education

The assessment identified an opportunity to further strengthen environmental education and sustainability communication throughout the festival experience. While the event naturally fosters a strong connection with the outdoors and the “highline vibe”, participants expressed interest in seeing more climate awareness activities, educational talks, and sustainability-focused information. Given the community’s strong appreciation for nature and conservation, future editions have an excellent opportunity to expand their positive impact through workshops, environmental campaigns, and educational signage that inspire responsible behavior both during and beyond the event.

Fire Prevention

The assessment also highlighted opportunities to further strengthen fire prevention measures. Operating in the Cerrado—one of the world’s most fire-sensitive ecosystems—requires a proactive approach to risk management, particularly during the dry season. While positive initiatives were implemented, including the distribution of biodegradable cigarette waste envelopes by Papelito, future editions could benefit from enhanced awareness campaigns, clearer signage, designated smoking areas, and more visible fire prevention activities. By building on these foundations, the festival can further protect the surrounding environment while reinforcing its commitment to responsible event management in this high valuable landscape.

Balancing Growth with Environmental Protection

The assessment also highlighted growing concerns about visitor pressure on natural areas.

As the festival continues to expand, some locations experienced overcrowding, particularly around waterfalls and highly attractive natural sites. Participants expressed concerns about noise levels, trail impacts, vegetation disturbance, and pressure on local wildlife.

Experts emphasized that future growth should be carefully managed through visitor capacity planning, improved signage, environmental zoning, and stronger protection of sensitive habitats. Establishing clear boundaries for high-traffic areas will help reduce ecological impacts while maintaining a high-quality experience for participants.

Warning: Electrostatic Discharge Damage in Highline Systems

Reports of electrostatic discharges have been reported from all around the world, resulting in damage and full highline system failures. The new report summarizes incidents and their communalities and makes recommendations for highliners in preventing such incidents.

Key Takeaways:

  • The damage from electrostatic discharges in highlines could easily lead to deadly accidents, which fortunately have not happened until today, let’s keep it this way.
  • The highlines analysed did not get damaged or fail due to lightning, but due to electric discharges (plasma lightning-arcs), happening in almost all cases underneath tapes and possibly more rarely in dry areas (likely due to backups heavily wrapping around mainlines).
  • The process of which we assume the highlines fail, is due to electric potential buildup between wet segments of highlines. This happens because a short segment under the tape stays dry and does not allow for conductivity.

Recommendations and Solutions 

  • Have a good storm forecast system in place, get regular updates
  • Don’t rig during the known storm season in your part of the world
  • Derig the highline if any storm comes near your highline, don’t risk partial damage under the tapes which you can’t see
  • We always recommend to derig and check properly if you are unsure.
  • Detape lines and inspect on a regular basis, so burn marks can be found.
  • We need to find alternative solutions to our current taping and technical solutions in our highlines (e.g. conducting elements along the line). For details and some ideas and recommendations check the discussion below

Safety has always been at the core of the slacklining community, and we’re excited to take it a step further with the launch of a new database.

This long-anticipated resource is designed to learn from past incidents and improve safety practices for everyone. Featuring a growing online repository and new, shorter submission forms available in six languages, the database makes it easier than ever to share and access critical safety insights.

By making data accessible to everyone, the ISA demonstrates its commitment to accountability and safety. This new format aligns with the evolving needs of slackliners worldwide, offering a more practical, transparent, and collaborative way to promote safety and empowering slackliners everywhere to take safety into their own hands.

Your Role in Building a Safer Community

This database thrives on community input. Your contributions can help make slacklining safer for everyone.

Report your incident, as minor as it might be, in one of six supported languages. Together, we can ensure the joy of slacklining continues to grow in a safer, more informed way.

We further implemented some key incident statistics into our website, which will update automatically with new reports. 

Let’s make slacklining safer through fostering a healthy risk culture within our sport, where you can talk about incidents and accidents and have others learn from them.

A Balanced Approach: Transparency Meets Responsibility

The ISA’s approach ensures transparency while prioritizing the safety and privacy of individuals. Reports are manually reviewed, anonymized where necessary, and checked through a “four-eye principle” process to minimize errors.

This effort is driven by a commitment to protect people—even when they may not protect themselves.

Will we make mistakes and be slow sometimes? Yes, but that’s part of the process. You are also welcome to help us speed up things in a responsible manner!

Why Publishing Accident Reports Is Complex

While the ISA is committed to providing access to critical safety information, publishing accident reports is far from straightforward. Here’s why:

  1. Checking accuracy of reports

Not all reports are clear or complete. Differentiating between incidents and significant accidents is crucial. Reports sometimes contain conflicting accounts, missing details, or errors that must be clarified. Some incidents might generate multiple reports of the same event. Often additional investigation is needed to verify them and confirm their validity. Volunteers within the ISA will take the time to ensure that accurate information is shared

  1. Respecting privacy of all involved parties

Images or videos accompanying reports often include graphic scenes and quite often show bystanders who did not consent to being publicly featured. Additionally, European law classifies medical data as critical personal data, necessitating anonymization and adherence to GDPR requirements. Responsibilities on data management need to be defined and data deletion needs to be institutionalized as well. We apply these strict principles on all data. In a smaller percentage of reports full anonymisation has to be applied. 

  1. Respecting Legal Processes

Severe injuries and fatalities can lead to legal proceedings. Publishing reports on these cases prematurely could interfere with ongoing legal investigations or trials. Everyone deserves the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise. Different nations also have extremely varying laws regarding accident reporting, privacy, and liability. The ISA must respect these legal and sometimes cultural nuances.

CRG Highline incident and consequences on webbing lifetime recommendations

On April 20th, 2024, there was a mainline and backup failure at Cosumnes River Gorge (CRG), California, United States of America. The failure occurred during a spontaneous tandem session, with the main snapping during a leash fall and the backup failing as it engaged. Both highliners fell but had only minor injuries given the circumstances.

Up until now the lifetime recommendations for non-PES (Polyester) and non-PA (Polyamid/Nylon) webbings were summarized as “high-tech/low stretch” webbings in our highline gear standards. Due to the CRG incident the ISA Safety Commission decided to specifiy the materials more clearly and revise the lifetime recommendations.

New lifetime recommendations for highline webbing:

We created a more specific UHMWPE (=Dyneema/Spectra) webbing category from which our database does not (yet) allow to make precise recommendations for lifetime, due to a small amount of datapoints that fit the category. We hope to change this with a new long-term test series starting this summer.

The following chart describes the recommended maximum lifetimes (RLT) for webbings of different strengths and materials. These lifetimes are to be interpreted as “days exposed to the elements / days in use” and NOT as the literal age of the webbing (date from manufacture).

These numbers account for an average of 3000 J/m2 dose per day over the course of one year

Many equatorial and high altitude regions have much higher UV dosages than 3000 J/m2 average dose per day (averaged over the year). Also the dosages fluctuate massively during seasons (summer – winter), this needs to be taken into account by the user.

These numbers represent the recommended lifetimes for normal use. Intensive use (festivals, competitions, etc.) or harsh environments (strong UV, high winds, sand, salt water, etc.) can drastically reduce the lifetime of highline webbing.

It is strongly recommended that webbing owners document the number of days the webbing was used for, to have a good understanding of when to retire the webbing from highline use.

“No recommendation” indicates that there is not enough data to provide a general recommendation – it is up to the manufacturer to suggest a lifetime, and the end user to determine a webbing’s continued suitability.

Effects of UV on breaking strength of polyamide and polyester highline webbing

Members of the ISA Safety Commission have performed comparative two year degradation tests of some commonly used webbing materials used in  highlining . These tests were performed at extreme weather conditions in a high alpine environment to evaluate the highline webbing safety standard ISA:41 and to provide further data for evaluating highline webbing lifetime around the globe.

The high-altitude Jungfraujoch research station offers a perfect venue for installing an array of frames with different webbing samples for a long-term, combined weathering and solar radiation study. Not only is the exposure rate and intensity uniquely high due to the altitude, but it is also complemented by the various weather observations done at the station. One aim of testing at higher elevation is to study the effects of higher UV values as they are found in more equatorial regions of the world.

Highline Backup Fall: Experiment and simulation

Members of the ISA Safety Commission have performed highline backup fall experiments and compared results to the simulator that is available on the ISA website. The results were in a range which justifies recommending the usage of the backup fall simulator.

We organized a series of experiments to test a range of parameters in a backup fall and compare them to the simulator. We were able to conclude that the simulator is accurate enough to be used as a prediction tool: it generally overestimated peak forces in the system in our experiments, and predicted  longer falls. More experiments are necessary on different configurations of lines, in particular longer highlines

Update of the Highline System Standard ISA:21

After publishing the first ISA Highline System Standard we recieved feedback from our Slackline Safety Partners, Members of the UIAA Safecom and independant third parties. All their feedback has been reviewed and incorporated into the new version of the standard. Summarzing, the most important points:

  • Enables Highline Systems that fulfill this standard to be used in workplace situations if maintenance checklists are utilized. These workplace situations may include, but are not limited to: shows, courses, competitions and festivals, etc.
  • Expanding the scope of the standard, allowing the use of industrial and climbing equipment if used properly and with a seperate backup
  • Simplifications and Clarifications of Wording and Definitions
  • Adding intermittent connections, meaning connections of main- and backup webbings along the line
  • and much more

The standard has allowed lots of festival organisers and professional riggers to better negotiate access and safety with insurance companies, landowners and officials from a local to a national level.

The ISA:21 Highline Systems Standard is a formal engineering definition and description of what a highline is and what the various components it consists of are.

On one hand this standard provides a framework for highliners as well as slackline manufacturers to understand what components are where and how they interact. On the other hand, it also provides a legal framework for highlines to be categorized as temporary installations and even permarigs with the prober maintenance checklists in place.

In addition to that, it also defines the forces that are acting upon the webbing, anchors and the highliner. In essence, it allows our partners, testing laboratories and technical engineers to communicate more effectively.

This standard further allows manufacturers to sell highline gear legally without being certified according to PPE standards. For this manufacturers further have to certify the individual components of the highline system.

New Backup Fall Simulator released!

We created a model which will tell you all the relevant forces and heights in a defined highline system:

  • Choose your webbings

  • Customize your setup

  • Rig it to your spot and desired tension

  • Choose the position of the slackliner, and even the bounce size!

Be aware, this is a beta version, it requires refinement! We are also looking for a frontend developer to make it look nicer.

Why would you need it?

This model is not going to help you rig well, it will not pad the sharp edges around your anchor. But it can help you make better decisions.

It can also be a support tool in attempts to get authorizations, be it for a show or for a training spot: you can show that our activity is safe and that the forces involved are relatively low.

How does it work?

The model is not a full real time model that would show you all that happens during a fall. This would require much bigger ressources and wouldn’t run on browser alone.

Instead, it takes a short cut and uses the preservation of energy to compute only the lowest point of the fall. This is where the forces in the anchors are the highest, as well as the forces in the leash. Have a look at the full explanation if  you’re interested.

Switzerland is the first country to recognise slacklining as a sport

Nine years after the founding of the national federation of Switzerland, Swiss Slackline was elected by the Swiss Sports Parliament as a new member of Swiss Olympic. This national recognition of the sport of slacklining as part of the sports family is unique worldwide and will significantly shape various aspects of the young sport in the future – away from the trend sport image, to an official sport.

The young sport of slacklining in Switzerland is structured in more than 20 regional clubs/associations and about 1000 slackliners, from which about 300 people highline. Several ISA Instructor courses and Rigger certifications have been organized since 2015. Access to alpine and urban spots, tree protection and various other environmental aspects, as well as the development of indoor training facilities for the cold Swiss winters have been a strong focus of the community.

The Bern City Slack Festival exists since 2009 and is one of the oldest and largest Slackline Festivals worldwide with about 1000 participants. National and larger championships take place every year in speedlining over ground (since 2013), tricklining (2013-2019), rigging (2017-), blind-rodeolining (2018-), endurance (2019-) and freestyle highlining (2017-). Swiss Slackline was also the first to organize a Highline World Championship In July 2022, which took place in Laax, Switzerland. Athletes from 18 nations demonstrated their skills and reached many millions of households through the media news and in live broadcasting. World champions were crowned in two disciplines for women and men, in the disciplines of freestyle highlining and speed highlining.

Swiss Olympic is the rooftop federation for all national sports federations in Switzerland. They govern all olympic and non-olympic sports in the country. The recognition of a sport has to be done for each nation state individually. Important criteria were the number of clubs and members, nationwide importance in all language parts of Switzerland, the organization of regular/yearly championships and the existence of a slackline ranking list, an educational program for trainers/instructors, an accident/incident reporting system, further the existence of a recognised international federation (that’s us, the ISA), an indirect membership with an IOC recognised federation (in our case the UIAA) and much more.

In order for the sport of slacklining with its disciplines to become olympic in the future, many more national federations must be created around the world (approx 50 in total), currently 20 of them are members of the ISA and slackline communities in other countries must also go through the complex steps of national recognition as a sport. The support of youth, the professionalization of the management of clubs and federations as well as the support of young athletes must be approached much more actively in the future as well. Whether slacklining will become an Olympic Sport one day depends on many factors, and the future will show where the young slackline community wants to go with its sport.
