IOC LAUNCHES SPORTS GROUP TO PROTECT MOUNTAINS – THE ISA IS ONBOARD<\/h2>\n

To mark the International Mountain Day, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the launch of the Mountain Summit \u2013 a group of sports organisations concerned with the current state of the world\u2019s mountains and committed to protecting them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The group currently includes 11 members \u2013 organisations engaged in sports that are practised in or around mountains. Their aim is to assess and minimise the negative impact of sports activities on mountain environments, and leverage the power of sport to raise awareness about the importance of these environments.<\/p>\n

\u201cMountains are\u00a0less often\u00a0in the spotlight\u00a0than oceans\u00a0when we talk about the environment, and yet they face serious threats from a wide range of human activities,<\/em>\u201d said Marie Sallois, Director for Sustainability at the IOC.\u00a0\u201cBy launching the Mountain Summit, we hope to facilitate exchanges of best practices and support the\u00a0sports community\u00a0in accessing\u00a0the knowledge and tools\u00a0needed to minimise the negative impacts sport can have on mountains, and maximise opportunities to raise public awareness about the threats they face.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The group\u2019s initial focus will be to produce a guide on how to organise sustainable events in mountain environments, applicable to all mountain sports. The group will also create a list of \u201ctop tips\u201d on how to protect mountains for those who enjoy them for recreational purposes.<\/p>\n

The work will be led by the IOC, joining forces with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its Mountain Heroes campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting mountain environments by engaging athletes dedicated to the cause.<\/p>\n

The founding members of the Mountain Summit include the\u00a0International Luge Federation<\/a>\u00a0(FIL), the\u00a0International Ski Federation<\/a>\u00a0(FIS), the\u00a0International Biathlon Union<\/a>\u00a0(IBU), the\u00a0International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation<\/a>\u00a0(IBSF), the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations (IFMGA)<\/a>, the\u00a0International Federation of Sport Climbing<\/a>\u00a0(IFSC), the International Slackline Association (ISA)<\/strong>, the\u00a0International Ski Mountaineering Federation<\/a>\u00a0(ISMF), the\u00a0International Cycling Union<\/a>\u00a0(UCI), the\u00a0International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation<\/a>\u00a0(UIAA), and Protect Our Winters Switzerland<\/a>, a not-for-profit climate advocacy group for the winter sports community.<\/p>\n

Mountains occupy around 22 per cent of the planet\u2019s land area and are home to 13 per cent of the world\u2019s population. They play an essential role in supplying water, energy, food and other services, benefitting more than half the world\u2019s population. Mountain tourism, which includes activities such as skiing, climbing and hiking, accounts for 15\u201320 per cent of the global tourism industry.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Mountains are extremely fragile. They are home to unique species that are particularly vulnerable to climate variations and melting glaciers. They are also under threat from the increasing volumes of waste generated by tourists. According to UNEP\u2019s Waste Management Outlook for Mountain Regions, up to 140,000kg of waste is estimated to remain after 60 years of expeditions to the Mount Everest region in Nepal, which has seen an exponential increase in visitors, from 20 in 1964 to approximately 36,000 in 2012.<\/p>\n

The IOC\u2019s work on mountains is part of the organisation\u2019s\u00a0broader commitment to sustainability<\/a>, which is one of the three pillars of Olympic Agenda 2020 \u2013 the strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement. In an effort to drive sustainability across the Olympic Movement, the IOC has also taken the lead in initiatives such as the\u00a0UN Clean Seas campaign<\/a>\u00a0to tackle plastic pollution and the\u00a0UN Sports for Climate Action Framework<\/a>.<\/p>\n
